about

Having released three ep’s over its six years of existence, Natsat proudly (and finally) releases its debut full length called Angle. I had never heard of this band before this cd landed in my mailbox and as usual the first judgements were made based on the record label and the artwork. Space Patrol is the home of noisecore combo Impure Wilhelmina and the Unsane alike band called Ximel among others. They’re French and to be honest there haven't been much French bands that stunned me lately, if any at all. The layout of Angle made me think of a mix between emocore and more noisy hydra head styled heavy hardcore. It looks dark with tints of brown and a retro font.

But none of that. Natsat surprised me positively with a decent portion of experimental sounding rock that walks the border between soft and noisy, gentle and rough, dissonant and harmonious. The best songs on the album are the ones that really make the most out of the diversity these contradictions create, such as the fifth song called "Great Northern". Still this band deserves your attention.

Angle is an album that has to grow because of the many instrumental twists and turns. It has a distinct jazzy feeling created by the addition of traditional instruments like saxophone and clarinet. These also add a lot to the overall warm feeling of the band. There’s not much singing and the song structures are quite diverse. All of that reduces the pop factor of these Frenchies to a minimum. Instead Natsat invites you to actively listen. By times it musically made me think of the Belgian band Quetzal, though that comparison should definitely not be taken too seriously.

It’s a hearable fact that Natsat tries to break boundaries and they deserve an extra point only for that. They’re exploring and there’s quite some energy hanging in the air. This album is a good one to give in to, but it’s not extremely spectacular. Still It’s more than curiously looking out to any future releases.
